Montepulciano is Abruzzo's grape, and this is a straightforward, honest expression of what it does best. Fermented in steel with prolonged maceration to pull out the colour and tannins, then aged in oak for structure. Nothing complicated, nothing unnecessary.

In the glass it's deep ruby with purple hints — rich aromas of ripe red fruit, sweet spices and a light balsamic note. The palate is soft but the tannins are firm, the kind that hold the wine together without getting in the way. Bold and real, exactly what you'd expect from a grape called I Tori — the bulls.

Pierluigi's Note: This is a solid, no-nonsense red that works every time. Open it with red meats, roasts, a good mature cheese, or a rich mushroom pasta. Serve at 16–18°C.

Vigneti Radica is a three-generation family estate in Tollo, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Their vineyards sit between the Adriatic coast and the Maiella mountains — one of the highest ranges in the Apennines — a position that gives the wines a natural tension between warmth and altitude.

Everything here is organic and farmed sustainably, with a clear focus on preserving the character of the land. Their flagship line is called I Tori — the bulls, or "li Ture" in local dialect — a symbol of strength and rootedness that fits the wines well.

Abruzzo sits on the central Adriatic coast, sandwiched between the sea and some of the highest peaks in the Apennines. It's a region of extremes — warm coastal plains on one side, wild mountain terrain on the other — and that contrast shows up in the wines.

The soils are varied and mineral-rich, the altitude keeps the acidity sharp, and the Adriatic breeze does the rest. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the region's signature red, deep and characterful. But Abruzzo is also home to Pecorino, a white grape that's been quietly gaining the attention it deserves — savoury, fresh, and with real personality.
